Analytical instruments generate different types of output and do not have a standard for data storage and exchange of information. Predominantly communications from instruments that are not PC based are through RS232 or TCP/IP. Some of the instruments can transmit sample information and some cannot, while most of the instruments are uni-directional i.e. they can only push results out. While PC based instruments can export results in various formats like Excel, CSV and ASCII, but the variety of formats produced by them could vary on the methodology of analysis and what information is needed in the output is decided by the end users. This makes getting data from PC based instruments much more complex. Most of the LIMS interface these instruments with a hard coded text parsing mechanism, even a small change in the output format would affect the working of such interfaces.
