WILE GRAIN MOISTURE METER: These Moisture meters are used to determine the moisture and the temperature of grains, fodder or straw through conductivity principle. The model Wile 26 is a simple, direct reading system with a digital screen. It can be calibrated with a known sample.

The models Wile 55 & 65 are for grains and they also come with a carrying case to make it more portable. These models are being used to determine the time of harvest, delivery or to decide when to dry or ventilate.

Moisture meters are generally calibrated with a known sample. The results of those known samples have to be analysed with approved method like Oven Moisture so that there is some kind of traceability for the whole analysis.

Falling Number is a device to test the Alpha Amylase activity in the flour or the grain. In this system certain amount of flour is taken and placed inside the viscometer tube. It is then mixed with distilled water and placed inside the system’s water-bath. The water-bath heats the sample upto 100 Deg C. This gelatinises the sample. After 5 seconds, the stirrer placed inside the viscometer goes up-and-down to create a stirring motion. After 55 seconds of stirring, the stirrer is dropped from the top position. The 5 seconds of gelatinisation process, the 55 seconds of stirring and the time the stirrer takes to reach from the top position to the bottom, in seconds is represented as Falling Number.

The ideal falling number for bread baking is at 250 to 350.

Bastak, Turkey Falling Number model 5000 is an automatic system to measure the enzyme activity in flour and wheat. The FN model measures the natural Alpha Amylase enzyme and the FFN model measures the total (microbiological + natural) Alpha Amylase enzymes. Dedicated software programs are available for all standard applications. The programs are flexible and can be adapted to user needs whenever required. The programs are Windows™ based and multifunctional so for example samples can be analyzed whilst preparing a new worklist or printing data.

The software is easy to set up, user-friendly and has a modular structure. Passwords prevent unauthorized operation and data modification. Three different access levels are available. Selecting one of the pre-installed applications and creating a work list allow the user to easily start the analysis. The following Applications are included: Alkalinity, Hardness, BOD, ISE, COD, pH, Color, Titrations, Conductivity, Turbidity and DO. A combination of the above applications is also possible. Sample identities can be entered by keyboard, downloaded from LIMS or scanned by a manual barcode reader. The work list can be extended during the run whenever more samples need to be analyzed. During the analysis run, the real-time results are displayed.

When a large number of samples have to be analyzed the Robotic Analyzer can run outside working hours as the software includes an “analyses scheduler”. This feature allows the operator to define start-up and shutdown procedures.

All operations of the analyzers are monitored and reported as required.

Information

Classification of soil is important for environmental control and construction purposes. Soil classification is based on several factors such as absorption, the ability to shrink or swell, water retention and permeability. Most of these factors independently correlate with the particle size (clay fraction) of the soil. The clay fraction is measured according to for instance ISO 11277 and allows the soil to be categorized within stated classes.

The analysis is carried out in three steps:

  1. Weighing the sample and separating the fractions
  2. Removal of Organic Matter and Carbonates
  3. Determination of the clay fraction

Skalar has developed a concept to automate the second and third step in this process using respectively a SP50 and SP1000 Robotic analyzer. Automation of the third step is of particular interest because of the precise timing and pick up height involved in the procedure.

After weighing, the samples are placed in a bottle. The bottles are placed in the SP50 and an amount of water is added. The bottles with sample are heated until the boiling point has been reached. A sample is boiled for 30 min. During heating and boiling every 30 min, 5 ml of hydrogen peroxide is added to remove the organic matter. Sample is cooled down. Same process is started but now with the addition of hydro chloric acid to remove the carbonates. During the complete process water is added in intervals to avoid excessive boiling of the sample.

The sample is transferred into a volumetric cylinder of 500/1000 ml. The system, a SP50 or SP1000, automatically adds Sodium pyrophosphate solution and brings the suspension to volume by adding distilled water. During a user-definable time, the sample is homogenized. After a settling period of several hours (up to 8 hours) a fraction of the suspension is taken at a predefined depth from the cylinder and this fraction is transferred to an evaporation dish by the system. After drying the remainder of the sample is weighed and the Clay fraction is calculated via the software.

This procedure can also be performed unattended allowing for overnight operation. In addition, it is also possible to measure different fractions, for example < 16 µm, or to measure directly after the cylinder is brought to volume.

The Skalar Robotic analyzers offer an economical and “walk-away” automation concept for the lengthy clay fraction analysis procedure, which modern advanced laboratories will find greatly beneficial.
