Color Measurement Instruments

Color Measurement Instruments – Colorimeters & Spectrophotometers

Accurate color measurement and color consistency are critical across industries such as paints & coatings, plastics, textiles, dyes, automotive, printing, electronics, and consumer goods. At Agaram Industries, we offer a complete portfolio of color spectrophotometers, colorimeters, and color formulation software from 3nh and CHNSpec, enabling reliable color control from shop floor to R&D laboratory.

Our range is clearly organized by types of instruments, making it easy to select the right solution based on application, accuracy requirement, and usage environment.

Pocket Color Readers

Pocket Color Reader

Pocket color readers are entry-level instruments designed for quick color checking and basic color comparison. These are economical variants used for quick color measurement

Typical applications: – Incoming raw material inspection – Field inspections and audits – On-site color approval and rejection – Basic pass/fail color decisions

Key features: – Compact, lightweight, and highly portable – Simple operation with fast results – Ideal for non-laboratory environments – Cost-effective color measurement solution-Can be connected with Mobile App for easy operation

Portable Colorimeters

Portable Colorimeters

Portable colorimeters are widely used for routine quality control and production monitoring, offering better accuracy and repeatability than pocket readers.

Typical applications: – Production-line color consistency checks – Batch-to-batch color comparison – Supplier and incoming quality control – Paints, plastics, rubber, textiles, and coated surfaces

Key features: – Stable and repeatable color measurement – Measurement in common color spaces such as **Lab*, ΔE** – Rugged design suitable for factory environments – Easy integration into QC processes

Advanced Portable Color Readers

Advanced Portable Color Readers

Advanced color readers provide enhanced accuracy and consistency while retaining portability, bridging the gap between colorimeters and spectrophotometers.

Typical applications: – Multi-location quality audits – Customer site inspections – Applications with tighter color tolerances – Combined field and laboratory usage

Key features: – Improved optical performance – Better inter-instrument agreement – Internal data storage and reporting – Higher confidence in on-site measurements

Portable Color Spectrophotometers

Portable Color Spectrophotometers

Portable color spectrophotometers are designed for professional color analysis where high accuracy and extremely low error tolerance are critical. These instruments can be seamlessly integrated with color formulation software, enabling precise color recipe development and optimization.

Typical applications include:

  • Color matching and formulation support
  • Research & Development and advanced quality control
  • Measurement of textured, patterned, or complex surfaces
  • Paints, coatings, plastics, inks, and automotive components

 Key features:

  • Full reflectance spectrum measurement
  • Support for multiple illuminants and standard observers
  • Excellent repeatability and superior inter-instrument agreement
  • Industry-standard solution for professional color measurement

Benchtop Color Spectrophotometers

Benchtop Color Spectrophotometers

Benchtop spectrophotometers offer the highest levels of accuracy and measurement stability, making them ideal for applications where strict color tolerances are critical.

These instruments support the measurement of transparent and transmissive samples, including liquids, in addition to reflectance measurements for opaque samples. This versatility makes them especially valuable for industries that handle both transparent and opaque materials.

Typical applications:
• Color formulation and R&D laboratories
• Food industry
• Textile industry
• Plastic and masterbatch manufacturing

Key features:
• Superior accuracy and repeatability
• Excellent long-term measurement stability
• Single instrument for both reflective and transmissive measurements

Other Color Measurement Instruments

Other than the ones mentioned above, special purpose color spectrophotometers have been designed for specific purposes that cannot be fulfilled by general purpose spectrophotometers.

  • 45/0 Geometry Spectrophotometers:
For certain applications—such as textured samples in food, printing, or textiles—a diffuse 8° geometry spectrophotometer may not be suitable. In such cases, a 45/0 geometry spectrophotometer is recommended. These models also feature a large aperture, making them ideal for measuring uneven or textured surfaces. Both portable and benchtop versions are available.
  • Spectro-Densitometer:
Designed specifically for printing applications, this instrument uses the required 45/0 geometry and, in addition to CIE Lab* and ΔE measurements, it can measure density parameters (CMYK values), dot area, and other print-related parameters. It is an ideal solution for comprehensive color and density control in printing.
  • Masterbatch Colorimeter:
Equipped with a large 50 mm aperture, this model is well suited for samples in pellet or granular form, such as plastic masterbatches and resins.
  • Liquid Spectrophotometer:
This model is optimized for transmissive liquid samples, including edible oils, flavor samples, and pharmaceutical liquids, providing accurate and consistent color measurements for transparent and semi-transparent liquids. Since these models measure only in transmissive mode and not reflective, these models are generally economical compared to benchtop models having both reflective and transmissive modes.
  • Multi-Angle Spectrophotometers:
For Metallic, pearlescent, and effect paints, a diffuse or single-angle spectrophotometer may not be adequate, as color appearance varies with viewing angle. Multi-angle spectrophotometers measure color at multiple angles—such as 15°, 45°, and 110°—to accurately capture the color characteristics of metallic and special-effect paints.

Color Formulation Software

Color formulation software is an essential tool for developing, optimizing, and reproducing color recipes across various industries.

Industries served: – Paints and coatings – Plastics and masterbatches – Dyes and pigments – Textiles and fibers

Key capabilities: – Creation and optimization of color recipes – Reduction of trial-and-error in formulation – Correction and adjustment of existing formulations – Integration with spectrophotometers for accurate spectral data – Consistent color reproduction across batches and plants

When used together with portable or benchtop spectrophotometers, color formulation software significantly improves color matching accuracy, material savings, and production efficiency.
